Reusable Food Storage: A Great Way to Save Money and Environment
Plastic or glass food storage is a great item for storing leftover foods, marinating meats, and food prep.
When buying storage, it’s a great idea to stick with one brand you like the most so that it is easier to match lids with the containers. We’ve bought all different brands because they were one sale and found that having a mix made them harder to store and match.
Glass food storage can be great because of the durability, dishwasher safety, and preferences of glass over plastics. The downside is the container can get hot when reheating food in them. Some brands can also shatter if they change temperature too dramatically. Also glass food storage may not freeze well if you want long term food storage.
Mason jars are another type of glass food storage that make great containers for salads, nuts, yogurt parfaits, beans, smoothies, and other items. We have made smoothies the night before and stored them in the fridge overnight to drink the next day. We also buy nuts in bulk and mason jars make a great way to transport an individual size of nuts to work or on a trip.
Plastic food storage is a little more versatile than glass storage. It freezes foods well and frozen foods can be separated from the container by running warm water. They are also lightweight and don’t adsorb heat as much as glass containers do.
There are other sized plastic or glass food storage containers that make better containers for storing items like cereal, flour, sugar, coffee, pasta, and rice in your pantry or dry storage area.
Some takeout food comes in sturdy reusable storage with no branding or labeling on it and can be washed and reused. Some deli meats come in decent plastic storage and can be reused as well.
