Double Edged Safety Razors: Economic and Environmentally Friendly Way to Shave

Women

As a woman, nothing epitomizes self-care like smooth shaven legs. However, the time it takes to get the end result and the amount of money spent replenishing razors can take a toll. I had often seen my husband shaving with a double edge razor and-to be honest was a bit intimidated. I had middle school flashbacks of butchering my legs and preferred to stick to the safety of my pink disposable.

After some coaxing, I finally decided to give the double edge razors a try. I was remarkably surprised at how smooth they left my legs and without a single nick. I was able to easily open the blade and clean the razor throughout the process which left a smooth finish to the very end. I could not believe how long the razor lasted, how easy it was to change the blade, and the amount of money I was saving. In addition to the personal gain, I knew I was making an impact in the environment. As cute and safe as I thought my disposable razors were, they were also contributing to a greater amount of waste and were bad for the environment. While smooth shaven legs feel great, knowing I was making a change to help the environment felt even better.

Men

As a man, I bought into all the marketing for the razors with all the fancy features and multiple blades and lubrication strips. I thought all these were necessary to get a smooth and clean shave and I was spending a fortune in buying replacement blades.

A friend recommended that I check out a doubled edged safety razor and said it achieved the same results for a fraction of the cost and reduced a lot of plastic waste in the blades and razors. I decided to give it a try and have never looked back.

One of the most important parts of the shaving experience is having a sharp razor blade. Since the razor blade can be changed easily, you can always keep the blade sharp. I also love the sleek stainless steel design of the razor and the rugged durability. I also love that the blade is a simple piece of metal with no added plastics so there is less waste.

The blade is also very easy to clean when it starts to get clogged after a heavy shave. You simply loosen the blade holder and rinse all the hairs out. With other safety razors you have to bang the razor on the sink edge trying to coax all the little hairs out. Cleaning the clogs lets you shave much quicker and more efficiently.

Nothing shaves like my current razor!

Maybe you are not ready to give up your current razor. It just shaves so close and so nicely. Well just keep it. Maybe you use this economic razor for the daily grind but use your special razor on those days that you really need that extra clean shave. You’ll get the best of both worlds.

Razors, Blades, and Accessories

We really like the Astra razor blades. The razor has a sleek look and a long handle with great grip to give you excellent control over the razor. It takes a little practice to shave correctly but becomes easier once you get the hang of it. With sharp razors you don’t have to put much pressure to get a good shave. The blades are an amazing deal, you can buy a hundred blades for less than $10. Be careful when changing the blades because they are very sharp on both ends. Hold them in the middle when changing blades.

Traveling With You

You can take your razor in carry-on luggage, just make sure to remove the razor blade. Keep your razor it at the top of your luggage because it can look strange on the airport scanners and the security team may want to inspect it further. Pack the razors in your checked luggage or buy some at your destination.

You can also take shaving soap in your carry-on luggage — unlike gels or aerosol cans that need to be checked. This can be convenient for traveling and last a lot longer than a travel sized can of shaving cream.
